It has finally rained at the farmette, after a very long drought, and my garden is putting out veggies and flowers like there’s no tomorrow.
My tomatoes are literally bursting out of their skins after being coddled along with sprinklers for the past six-plus weeks. I left them for only a couple of days while it was pouring, and when it let up for an hour yesterday, I ran out and picked a six-quart basket of the beauties! Time to break out the canner and get busy saucing this afternoon.
I’ve also started harvesting my squash. I got the Sunburst variety because the fruit is yummy and the plants don’t take over the whole garden. The only down side is that I didn’t realize how prolific they are - I’ll be covered in them! I’m envisioning a “Squash - free to good home” sign at the end of the driveway...
We had our first potatoes and carrots last night for supper. I didn’t peel them - they really do taste way better just scrubbed and steamed. I like to put a wee glaze of butter and brown sugar on the carrots - something my younger sister taught me years ago. When they’re freshly pulled from the soil, they are like little bits of orange candy.
As for the flowers, my lilies have bloomed in their masses, and glads are popping out their lovely peach and scarlet colours. The hanging baskets are literally weighed down by the number of blossoms that have burst out.
Gotta love being able to feed ourselves and feast our eyes on so much bounty. Until next week.
